Call SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville today at 207-622-7166

Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. Contact SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville If You Experience a Toilet Overflow or a Sewer Backup

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville has the specialized training and equipment to safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Are you wondering what to do with a sewer backup or a toilet that is overflowing?

Sewer back ups are a common occurrence for both homeowners and businesses. Just this morning, one of our crews responded to a business that experienced a sewer backup.  Luckily, the property owner recognized the importance of calling SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville to professionally clean and mitigate the back up.  Since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses, sewer backups are considered an emergency and should be dealt with as promptly as possible.  SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Here are some key items that property owners should know about sewage backups:

  • Sewage is one of the most dangerous substances that can enter homes and businesses.  Sewage contains a variety of pathogenic - disease causing - fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites. Anyone working with a sewage loss must be up to date on vaccinations, including one for Hepatitis B.
  • Sewage exposure is particularly dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, including anyone under the age of two or over the age of sixty, those who are pregnant, ill, recovering from surgery, on prescription drugs or going through chemotherapy.
  • It is not safe to stay in buildings that have flooded with sewage unless the contaminated area can be completely sealed off and placed under controlled air flow so that there will be no cross contamination of unaffected areas.
  • Highly absorbent sewage-saturated materials, such as carpet, carpet pad, upholstery, bedding, wicker, paper or even fabrics that can't be washed in hot water for at least 10 minutes, must be contained and disposed of properly. This goes for sewage-saturated drywall, insulation and several other structural materials as well.
  • There is simply too great a health risk involved if any of these materials are dried in place and cleaned without the proper products and sanitation.
  • Only the most highly trained professionals with proper products and equipment should attempt sewage remediation work.

Our crews at SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We are water damage restoration specialists with specialized training, equipment and protective gear to safely restore your home or business.

What is Mold and What Should I Do if I Find Mold in My Home or Business?

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

What is mold and is it common?

With longer days and warmer weather, we here at SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville have been fielding a lot of calls about mold.

Mold is a type of fungus that consists of small organisms found almost everywhere. Mold spores can be black, white, orange, green, or purple. Outside, molds play an important role in nature, breaking down dead leaves, plants, and trees.  Mold is simply part of nature.

What do we do when mold spores work their way into our personal spaces? Well, the first thing you need to know is how mold gets into your dwellings.

Because mold occurs naturally in our environment, it is tricky.  Mold is everywhere. Mold spores are in our air, in the soil, and they are already in our homes. Most mold spores are harmless and lay dormant for their entire existence. They can come into our homes through air ducts, ventilation systems, leaky roofs, through opened doors and windows, on our clothes and can even come in on our pets. But, like any living thing, they need to be fed to survive. So, what do mold spores need to thrive? Moisture.

Like any living organism, mold spores need water (moisture in this case) to grow. Moisture in your home is often found near pipes, windows, and places that may have leaked at one point, like a roof. What do you do if you find mold in your home?

According to the CDC mold should be tested to confirm whether or not it is a threatening or non-threatening species. This is not a test that you can do yourself.  Since mold can cause health effects, mold should be handled by professionals. There are several companies in the state of Maine that handle mold testing.  Once you have had your mold tested, how do you treat mold and keep you and your family safe?

We here at SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville are capable of removing and treating mold in a variety of ways. Our trained technicians will take care of it for you so you can get back to living “Like it never even happened.”

Frozen Pipes in Augusta and Waterville

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

So many of us in Maine have endured frozen water pipes in our homes or place of business. What can happen when we don't recognize a frozen pipe in a timely manner?  If it goes undetected, the pipe can burst from the expansion of the freezing water.  Water has a unique property in that it expands when it freezes.  The fluctuating and often extreme temperatures that we experience in Maine, make our water pipes even more susceptible to freezing. Don't let frozen pipes ruin your home or business.

Here are some helpful hints to help prevent your pipes from freezing:

  1. Close inside valves that feed outside hose bibs.
  2. Keep garage doors closed.
  3. If you are going away for the season, be sure to keep your thermostat at a moderate temperature.  Many people recommend that you don’t lower your thermostat to below 55 degrees F.

If your pipes do freeze, here are some steps you can take to limit damage:

  1. If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle of water comes out, this may be indicative of a frozen pipe.
  2. The most likely locations for a frozen pipe are in exterior walls or where the water comes into the home.
  3. As you attempt to thaw the pipe, keep the faucet open so that the water can run though it.
  4. You can apply heat to the pipe using an electric heating pad or a hair dryer.  Do not use a blow torch and do not leave the heating element unattended.

If all that fails and your frozen pipe bursts, call us at SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville.  Even in the cold Central Maine winters, one of our certified technicians will be at your doorstep within four hours ready to help!  You can read more about our water removal services at SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville.com.

SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville Responds Quickly to Your Winter Weather Woes

We all know that Maine winters can be brutal.  Cold temperatures and plenty of snow are usually on the agenda and our winters are long!  The extreme temperatures put our homes and businesses at risk for frozen pipes and ice dams on our rooftops.  We’re always glad when the days start to get longer and Mother Nature begins to relent and provides us with the hope of spring and a new season.  Unfortunately, even as Maine begins to awaken from her cold slumber, we still can feel the affects of our states coldest months.

When our snowpack begins to melt, and rain adds to the liquid load, water damage in the Augusta/Waterville area is inevitable. As the water skims the surface, it seeks any place to settle and pool. Unfortunately for you, that often means it seeps into basements, attached garages, and walkout living spaces. We have the technicians and equipment to remove water and dry out your lower levels fast, explaining why we are the first call for you and your neighbors.

Research, tools, and training underscore why SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville is best positioned to handle the challenges when fluctuating weather causes rivulets and streams of melted snow to head into your home. Because the ground remains frozen, it is crucial that the trapped water is contained for disposal away from your house. Storm sewers are also frozen over providing no access to an easy way to drain water extracted from your home.

Creating solutions for property damages related to bitter cold winter weather and plenty of snow is why SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville is a trusted resource in Central Maine. We get the water out and then minimize any permanent damage by completely drying out the affected structural components.

Our green SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville service trucks carry pumps, extractors, air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers, ensuring out team begins mitigating your winter water woes immediately after our experienced crew leader assesses the scene and devises the remediation plan.

Ability to handle any extreme that Mother Nature throws is why SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville is a local restoration industry leader. Call us for assistance day or night at (207) 622-7166, we will work to restore your property “Like it never even happened.”

It's getting chilly outside!  The leaves are changing colors and our outside attire includes vests and coats.

With the cooler temperatures this week, many Mainers are finding it's time to fire up the furnace!

Furnace maintenance is one of those things that often gets forgotten, but it is one of the most important things you can do as a homeowner for the safety of your property and your family.  Not only is an improperly working furnace costly, but it can be quite dangerous.

According to the NFPA 27% of house fires between 2012 and 2016 were caused by improperly cleaned furnaces, pellet stoves and chimneys. 54% of those fires ended in a loss of life with an average of 490 people a year. Fires are not always an avoidable thing, but properly maintaining your heating methods can help.

Space heaters are also a large component in heating related fires. It is best to become informed on proper use and wattages.

Even with proper use and maintenance, fires can happen. From small electrical fires to entire house fires we are here to help. Our trained technicians have the unique ability to remove soot, odor and sometimes even charring from contents and structures. With treatment and our tested products we will help you get your home back, ”Like it never even happened."

Puffbacks: A Bigger Issue Than Just a Call To Your Furnace Repairman

2/16/2019 (Permalink)

Despite the increasing number of viable alternative heating methods available on the market, a large number of people in Maine and New England still rely on oil furnaces to heat their homes and businesses. Modern heating systems are very reliable and dependable; most issues can be readily addressed by a qualified professional. Unfortunately, the malfunction commonly known as the "puff back" is not so easily dealt with.

A puffback is an explosion inside the burner chamber of the furnace, similar to the backfiring of a car. While there are a number of causes - such as excessive debris or a buildup of oil fumes prior to burner ignition - the resulting explosion can shoot soot and debris through the furnace's exhaust system...and into your home.

This soot is not just a powder-like substance; instead, it is black, sticky and will include a mixture of oil that is difficult to clean. Walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture and curtains are coated with a fine film of soot and smoky streaks. Typically, the damage is worse with a forced-air heating system or central air-conditioning, because the duct work provides a path through the house, even into closets. In addition to the soot, a puff back causes a foul odor to permeate your home. Oil-based soot is extremely difficult to remove and needs to be cleaned as soon as possible.

Fortunately, SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville has the knowledge and experience to take care of difficult problems such as this. Since each puffback situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your home or business, while also treating your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

In the event of a puffback - or any fire, smoke or water emergency - call SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville - We are always here to help!

Workplace Fire Safety

Fire Safety Tips for the Workplace

No matter type of business you conduct at your workplace, fire safety should always be the main concern. Here are a few fire safety tips you can distribute to your staff.

Fire Prevention

  • Keep your work area free of waste paper, trash and other items that can easily catch fire.
  • Check on your electrical cords. If a cord is damaged in any way, replace it. Try not to lay cords in places where they can be stepped on, as this will contribute to deterioration of the protective outside coating.
  • Don't overload your circuits.
  • Turn off electrical appliances at the end of each day.
  • Keep heat-producing equipment away from anything that might burn. This includes copiers, coffee makers, computers, etc.

In the Event of a Fire

  • Upon finding a fire, call 911 immediately and don't hand up with the emergency responder until told to do so.
  • Close doors when exiting to help limit the spread of smoke and fire throughout the building.
  • Never use elevators during an evacuation.
  • Follow the escape plan and meet at a pre-determined place outside of your building and away from danger. Conduct a headcount to ensure all of your staff has evacuated.

The best way to ensure the safety of your staff is thorough fire prevention and preparation. Talk with your staff about fire safety in the workplace today.

Should your business suffer fire damage, contact SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville at 207-622-7166.  Let us help you make it "Like it never even happened."

Ice Dams Can Be Destructive

2/3/2019 (Permalink)

You can spot an ice dam when you see icicles hanging from the roof's edge.

Many homes in the northern US know what an ice dam is and the damages that they can do to the home. What is an ice dam? It is a thick accumulation of ice that forms over the eaves of a house. Water settles behind the dam and gradually works its way beneath roof shingles through a cycle of freezing and thawing."

When heat escapes the home and heats up the roof, it causes the snow to melt. That melting snow flows down the slope of the roof to refreeze on the unheated portions of the roof, like the eves and overhangs. As this cycle continues, the ice builds up on the edges of your home and traps water underneath. It is this water that can then leak into your home.

Make sure the ventilation in your eaves, the peak and overhangs is adequate. "An air space above the insulation in the ceiling or attic then allows cold air to move freely, keeping the roof cold and preventing the snow cover from melting. When a roof is being constructed, inexpensive Styrofoam baffles may be installed to ensure that there is a passageway for cold air from the eaves to the peak."

Make sure your attic is properly insulated and sealed to prevent moisture from getting into the living areas of your home.

When putting on a new roof, make sure the snow and ice shield is installed properly on the subroof. This helps prevent moisture from finding its way into the home. This product forms a barrier for your roof to prevent against the water.

But then there are times that the damage does occur. When it does, have your roof cleared, and then call SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville at 207-622-7166 to inspect your home and make it "Like it never even happened."

When a Water Damage Becomes a Mold Problem

2/3/2019 (Permalink)

When there's a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking water line, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business. Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Although every mold damage scenario is different requiring a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same. The following steps illustrate a "typical" mold removal process.

Call us at 207-622-7166 for help with your mold remediation needs.

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville. A representative will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed.

Inspection and Damage Assessment

Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view.

Mold Containment

Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

Air Filtration

Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO® technicians utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.

Prepare for Frozen Pipes and Ice Dams

1/12/2019 (Permalink)

Frozen pipes, puffbacks, ice dams, and the flu. Yes the fresh fallen snow is a beautiful sight for many, but all the complications that can accompany winter may leave you a little uneasy. Maybe you are a new home owner or business owner? Maybe this is your first time in a location where temperatures often dip into the negatives? Either way we have outlined a few of the hazards often seen when we are in the dead of winter.

Frozen Pipes

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water sources and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.

Ice Dams

Ice dams form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under shingles and into your structure’s interior. Ice dams can be a major problem during the winter months. Be sure all gutters are cleaned and secured.

If your home is victim to the powerful effects of the cold winter temps, please call SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville at 207-622-7166.  We are always here to help!

Preparing Your Home and Business For Winter

1/12/2019 (Permalink)

With the winter season upon us, we all know that colder temperatures can bring frozen pipes and furnace malfunctions can cause puffbacks. There are however many things you can do to help prepare your home and/or business for all winter throws at us.

Preparing your home:

  • Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells so warm air can circulate around pipes.
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets especially if they run through unheated or uninsulated areas of your home.
  • Ensure gutter are clean and secure. Leaves and debris can accumulate in gutters which could lead to roof problems and water damage.
  • Proper maintenance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of puffbacks.

Preparing your business:

  • Inspect your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Heavy wind , rain, ice, or snow can cause branches to fall which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Check walkways and parking lots for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potentially slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Contact your local Sales & Marketing Representative at SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville and ask about starting and Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for your business.

If the cold temps have gotten the best of your home or business, call SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville.  We will make it Like It Never Even Happened.

Prepare to Prevent Frozen Pipes

10/20/2018 (Permalink)

It's never too early to prep your home for the impending Winter.  Fall is upon us, so now is a great time to begin preparing for the colder weather while it's still warm! Colder temperatures can be extremely damaging to your home if you're not prepared.

Contrary to popular belief, pipes don't typically burst at the point where water freezes, but somewhere between the freeze and a closed faucet. When the pressure builds due to ice blockage, it has nowhere to go but through the pipe walls, which can quickly lead to extensive water damage. Winterize your home plumbing, stop frozen pipes before they happen and prevent expensive water damage by properly insulating the plumbing pipes in your home.

1. Pipe insulation

Your pipes are more susceptible to freezing damage when temperatures drop to 20 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Pipe insulation provides you with a first line of defense against cold temperatures and frozen pipes. For pipe winterization, add a thicker layer of insulation around your pipes.

Insulate the pipes in all unheated areas, as they are most likely to freeze. Wrap the pipes in insulation tubes made of polyethylene or fiberglass. Measure the outside diameter of your pipes to make sure you purchase the correct size of tube. Wrapping pipes in heat-tape prior to insulating adds an extra layer of protection, but make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid damage.

2. Keep a dripping faucet

On nights when the temperature is expected to drop below freezing, turn on faucets along the exterior walls to create a small, steady drip; doing so will allow the water to move and flow, helping to keep it from freezing. This also eliminates pressure that can build between the faucet and an ice blockage, so even if a pipe freezes, it may not burst.

3. Open cabinets

You can stop frozen pipes by introducing more heat. Open all sink-based cabinet doors along exterior walls to allow more heat to reach the pipes.

4. Fix exterior cracks

Note any cracks or holes along the outside walls and foundation of your home. Filling holes and cracks with spray foam insulation and caulking can help stop the cold air from coming into contact with your water pipes during extremely cold weather.

Taking these steps may prevent your pipes from freezing this winter.  If frozen pipes cause a water damage situation in your home, please do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville - We are always here to help!

Space Heater Safety Tips

10/20/2018 (Permalink)

Portable electric space heaters can be a convenient source of supplemental heat for your home in cold weather. Unfortunately, they can pose significant fire and electric shock hazards if not used properly. Fire and electrical hazards can be caused by space heaters without adequate safety features, space heaters placed near combustibles, or space heaters that are improperly plugged in.

It is estimated that portable electric heaters account for 1200 fires per year.  Safety should always be a top consideration when using space heaters. Here are some tips for keeping your home safe and warm when it’s cold outside:

  • Make sure your space heater has the label showing that it is listed by a recognized testing laboratory.
  • Before using any space heater, read the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels carefully.
  • Inspect heaters for cracked or broken plugs or loose connections before each use. If frayed, worn or damaged, do not use the heater.
  • Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when you're leaving a room or going to sleep, and don't let pets or children play too close to a space heater.
  • Space heaters are only meant to provide supplemental heat and should never be used to warm bedding, cook food, dry clothing or thaw pipes.
  • Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home and outside all sleeping areas and test them once a month.
  • Proper placement of space heaters is critical. Heaters must be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including papers, clothing and rugs.
  • Locate space heaters out of high traffic areas and doorways where they may pose a tripping hazard.
  • Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip, which could overheat and result in a fire. Do not plug any other electrical devices into the same outlet as the heater.
  • Place space heaters on level, flat surfaces. Never place heaters on cabinets, tables, furniture, or carpet, which can overheat and start a fire.
  • Always unplug and safely store the heater when it is not in use.

How to Tell if My Home Has Mold

10/20/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is microscopic which cannot be seen with the naked eye. Therefore, it is very hard to determine if your home has mold unless you can visibly see the black growth. Mold needs water to grow and will grow if there are leaks.

Hidden mold can be found by doing some simple investigating:

  • Where do you have water problems?
  • Check under windows since condensation can form and mold will grow on the sill.
  • Bathrooms have a lot of water. Any leak or corner that collects moisture is a potential place for mold growth.
  • The water heater and water softener are notorious for having leaks, especially when the water softener purges.
  • You can often find mold around the edges of their tanks.

If you do find mold in your home or building, know that SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville has the knowledge and experience to remediate the problem.

Tips As We Head Into the Heating Season

9/8/2018 (Permalink)

September is already here...which means Fall is just around the corner. Soon, temperatures will begin to cool - especially at night - which means it will be time to fire up the fireplaces, turn on the furnace, and get that space heater out of storage. These are all great ways to keep homes toasty and warm, but they also increase the risk of residential fires. Be sure to follow the safety tips below when preparing to heat your home as we head into the Fall and Winter months:

Fireplaces

  • Inspect your chimney regularly for cracks and obstructions.
  • Don't let creosote build up in your chimney, as it could set off a roof fire.
  • Don't "over build" your fire using too much paper. You could ignite the soot in your chimney.
  • Never burn charcoal in your fireplace. It gives off deadly carbon monoxide.
  • Keep your damper open if there are hot ashes in your fireplace. Closing the damper could enable hot ashes to heat up and cause a damaging fire.
  • Let ashes cool in a sealed metal container.

Furnaces

  • Before you turn on your furnace, have it inspected by a qualified professional.
  • Make sure to check the condition of the automatic controls and emergency shutoffs.
  • If the walls and ceiling around your furnace feel too warm, add insulation or additional clearance space.
  • Keep all trash and combustibles away from the furnace.
  • Check your chimney for cracks or loose bricks.
  • Seal all unused flue openings with solid masonry.

Space Heaters

  • Make sure your space heater has a working safety light, alarm, automatic shut-off switch, and a cut-off device to prevent overheating.
  • Keep all objects, people and pets at least three feet away from the heater.
  • Never use a space heater in your bathroom. Water and electric appliances don't mix.

Heating your home is extremely important, but it's equally as important to do so safely.

The reality is, even after doing all of these things, a fire can happen when you least expect it.  If it does happen to you, please know that SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville is ready to help.

Maine Flood Safety

5/5/2018 (Permalink)

When seasonal flooding occurs in Maine, we usually have some advance notice and the National Weather Service issues flood watches and warnings. It gives us time to prepare and, if necessary, evacuate an affected area.

Flash floods, however, are quite a bit different; they can happen whenever we get too much rain in a small period of time, at any point during a year. Warnings are issued, but there may be little or no advance notice and flood waters can rapidly move into an area.

Flood Facts:

  • A car or small truck will float in as little as two feet of water. If your vehicle begins to float, you lose control over the vehicle. If your vehicle stalls in a flooded roadway, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. The water may sweep the vehicle and its occupants away.
  • Nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are vehicle related.

Flood Fatalities in Maine

  • In 1996, heavy rain caused serious flooding in New Hampshire and western Maine. A Scarborough, Maine man drowned when he drove his car into a flooded roadway where the road had washed away.
  • In 2004, a man died in Gardiner when attempting to kayak in a swollen stream. Rushing flood water may look exciting to the amateur canoeist or boater, but it has incredible power and may be carrying hidden debris.
  • In 2007, a woman and her little granddaughter in Limerick were swept away when they tried to walk through flood water.
  • In 2012, a Milo man was killed when he drove into a washed-out section of road.

Safety Tips:

  • Never drive a car into a flooded roadway as the road underneath may be washed out.
  • Stay clear of streams during heavy rainfall events. Swiftly moving water is extremely powerful and can easily overpower a person.
  • Do not attempt recreational boating in flood water. The current can be powerful and there may be heavy debris swept along in the water, making it extremely dangerous.
  • Keep children and pets inside and away from flooded streets, culverts, and streams.
  • Report flooding to the appropriate authorities.
  • Obey road blocks and barriers, even if the flooding has receded. Flood waters may have undercut the road surface or left dangerous debris in the roadway.
  • If you live in a flood prone area, have a plan in case the water starts rising quickly.
  • Know your evacuation route and if advised to evacuate do so immediately.

Although we can't stop the flood waters, we can certainly help with the cleanup and restoration after the waters have receded. When in need, contact SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville at (207)622-7166; we're always here to help!

He made several calls and, fortunately, one was to SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville.  We were the only service provider that would travel to his remote location and we were on site within a short time to begin the cleanup process.

The Unseen Water Hiding in Your Home

3/16/2018 (Permalink)

This wood flooring looks dry on the surface but the meter detects moisture hidden below.

You have been away for ten days on vacation, you arrive home at 9pm on a Sunday night and what do you want do? Probably get home, relax, and call it a night. But when you walk in and a pipe has burst or a toilet has leaked while you were gone? That changes everything.

In order to save money, people can sometimes use their own tools to stop and dry up water damage. Unfortunately, sometimes the unseen water in your home or office can cause the greatest problems. Hidden behind walls, cabinets or under flooring can be pooled water or moisture that will cause greater health risks to your home and family later on. Here at SERVPRO® of Augusta/Waterville, we have the tools to see that hidden damage and help stop potential problems.

  • Moisture Sensors – these will detect moisture in carpet, walls, and baseboards.
  • Moisture Meters – these determine the level of moisture in materials. They can penetrate into the material to identify what's going on below the surface.  These tools assist us to determine our plan for drying.
  • Thermohygrometers – these devices help monitor the temperature and relative humidity in the air. Temperature and humidity play a large role in the drying process and help the SERVPRO® professionals determine how to adjust the process along the way.
  • Infrared Cameras – this helps identify the areas that have hidden moisture and document its location. These cameras identify temperature differences in materials from where the areas are cooling (water has been evaporating) and where it is still affected by the moisture.

Our goal is to restore your property “Like it never even happened.” When in doubt, call SERVPRO® of Augusta/Waterville.

Central Maine Smoke and Soot Cleanup

2/18/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and Soot Facts

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Conditions in Central Maine Might Be Right For Mold

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, snow brought inside your heated garage from your vehicle, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Augusta/Waterville to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

The magnet that survives, fire and water damage

A few years ago we had a customer that had a magnet of ours on their fridge.  They then had a water damage, and a year or so later they had a fire damage.  Our magnet was still on their fridge.  We thought it was ironic since those are the services we provide.  Do you have our magnet on your fridge?
